As an ambitious lawyer at the firm of Skadden, Arps, et. al, I had success in everything I put my mind to. But when it came to carrying a child to term, no matter how much I focused, wished and prayed, miscarriage was always the end result.  Turning to a fertility doctor for a diagnosis and direction, his answer was devastating. The only option was to have a child through gestational surrogacy. He then ushered us out of his office to meet with the nurse coordinator.  Standing in the office, still stunned from the news, and now crying, the nurse gave us a stack of papers which included surrogacy agencies. She told us to come back when we had selected a surrogate. Overwhelmed with information on a process we didn’t understand, we had no clue on where to start to find a surrogate, what to expect financially, emotionally, and how long the whole process would take from start to finish.

As a result of my sojourn from gestational surrogacy to motherhood, in 2009, I left the big law firm life and opened my own practice, specializing in gestational surrogacy, along with egg, sperm and embryo donation matters. Creating a family through surrogacy is scary, expensive, and for women who find they can’t carry a child, devastating. I know firsthand what that journey feels like. Like with many things in life, there are some things you can’t control but you can influence the uncontrollable by arming yourself with information and knowing your options.
